Cricket's three formats and major tournaments

The three types of matches Bangladeshi cricket fans follow most — atp 555 offers betting on all three.

T20 — The fastest format

In this 20-over format, match situations can change in an instant. BPL (Bangladesh Premier League) and IPL are the most anticipated times of year for cricket fans. Because the calculations shift with every ball and over, T20 is ideal for live betting.

ODI — Fifty-over strategy

Major bilateral series including the ICC Cricket World Cup are played in ODI format. The powerplay, middle overs and death overs each have a different character in the betting markets.

Test — The long contest

In a five-day Test, there is room to analyse pitch conditions, weather and the depth of the batting lineup together. Since a draw is a valid result in Test cricket, you will see three options in the match winner market.

Major tournaments: BPL, IPL, ICC T20 World Cup, Asia Cup and Bangladesh Tigers international series — various options are open across atp 555's betting markets for all these tournaments. Cricket offers more market variety than football and other sports, because every over and wicket creates a separate betting moment.

Football and other sports

Alongside cricket, atp 555 also offers football betting. A football match lasts 90 minutes and typically has three markets — home win, away win and draw. While there are no over-by-over markets as in cricket, football offers separate markets such as half-time/full-time, double chance, number of goals and first goalscorer.

Tennis and badminton have set-by-set betting, basketball has quarter-wise markets, and markets also open at various times for subcontinental sports like kabaddi and hockey. The key difference is that in cricket every ball is an active event, so live markets move every moment — in other sports that pace is somewhat slower.

Popular betting markets in cricket

Below is a simple introduction to the most commonly used markets in cricket betting at atp 555. Team A and Team B are used in each example — the numbers are for illustration only and are not the odds for any specific match.

Match Winner

Which team will win the match? Two options (Team A or Team B) in T20 and ODI; three options (Team A, Team B, Draw) in Test.

Simplest market

Toss Winner

Decided before the match starts. Which team will win the toss — this market closes before the main game begins.

Pre-match bet

Top Batsman

Who will score the most runs in an innings? You pick the highest scorer either within a specific team or across both teams.

Player prop market

Total Runs Over/Under

Will the total runs in the match be more (over) or fewer (under) than a set number? You can place your bet after analysing team performance.

Totals market

Top Wicket-Taker

Which bowler will take the most wickets in an innings? The type of pitch and match conditions play an important role in this bet.

Bowler prop market

Multi Bet

Combine multiple matches or events into a single bet. If all selections are correct the return is larger; if any one selection is wrong you lose the entire bet.

Multiple selections
Handicap and first ball markets: In a run-line handicap, the weaker team is given a head start in runs — the key question is whether the spread is covered, beyond just win or loss. First ball dot, wicket or runs — these markets are brief but engaging.

Three ways to write odds

The same odds can be written three ways — decimal, fractional and American. atp 555 generally uses the decimal format, but knowing all three is useful on any platform.

Format Team A (not favourite) Team B (favourite) How to read it
Decimal 3.00 1.50 Multiply your stake by the odds to get your total return
Fractional 2/1 1/2 Stake the right-hand number to win the left-hand number as profit
American +200 -200 + means profit on a 100 stake; − means the amount you need to stake to win 100

Worked example 1 — Team A wins, stake ৳1,000

Decimal 3.00 = Fractional 2/1 = American +200. If Team A wins, total return is ৳3,000 (৳2,000 profit + ৳1,000 stake). If Team A loses, you lose ৳1,000.

Worked example 2 — Team B is favourite, stake ৳1,000

Decimal 1.50 = Fractional 1/2 = American -200. If Team B wins, total return is ৳1,500 (৳500 profit + ৳1,000 stake). American -200 means you need to stake ৳200 to win ৳100 profit.

How do odds change?

The odds available before a match starts change during live play. When a wicket falls, the batting side's odds rise (their chance of winning drops, so the potential return increases), and after a big six or four they shorten.

A simple rule for reading decimal odds: the lower the number, the more likely that outcome is considered to be — but the smaller the return. A higher number means more risk and a higher potential return.

Live in-play betting

In-play betting lets you place bets while the match is in progress. In cricket, odds are recalculated with every wicket, every maiden over and at the end of each powerplay. This gives you the chance to make decisions based on how the match is unfolding.

Say Team A has made a good start in their first innings — if three quick wickets then fall, Team A's odds in the live market will lengthen and Team B's will shorten. Those who can read the flow of the match at that changed moment have the opportunity to place a new bet.

Some markets may temporarily suspend during in-play — especially right after a wicket falls. This is normal. When the market reopens you can bet at the new odds.

Some practical tips for betting

Betting is a form of entertainment — expecting a reliable income from it is not advisable. The tips below are drawn from common habits of experienced bettors.

  • 1 Set a fixed budget and never spend beyond it. Avoid placing extra bets to try to recover money you have lost.
  • 2 Multi bets offer bigger returns, but a single wrong selection means losing everything. Start with single bets to build experience.
  • 3 Odds represent an estimate of probability, not a guaranteed result. You can still lose on a low-odds bet.
  • 4 In live betting, making quick decisions driven by emotion is not a good idea. Pause for a moment before placing a bet.
  • 5 For more on responsible gaming, read the Responsible Gaming page — it covers how to set limits and where to get help.
  • 6 The toss can matter in T20 and ODI — especially given pitch or weather conditions. However, historically, each team's win rate in the toss market is roughly equal.
  • 7 For over/under markets, keep track of which teams typically score high and on which pitches runs tend to be fewer — this makes your analysis more data-based.
  • 8 If you are new, start with small bets — build your experience gradually once you understand the markets and odds.
  • 9 Never bet with hard-earned savings — only spend money whose loss would not affect your daily life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about cricket betting.

Each format has a different duration and match situation. In T20, results shift quickly so odds move fast too. In ODI, the pace of the match stays relatively steady through the middle overs. In Test cricket, pitch deterioration, fatigue and weather all come into play over five days — and since a draw is a possible third result, all odds are adjusted accordingly.

Yes, in in-play markets odds change immediately when a wicket falls. When the batting side loses a wicket, their chance of winning drops, so their odds rise. Similarly, after a series of big hits or sixes, the batting side's odds shorten. Some markets may temporarily suspend right after a wicket falls — they reopen once new odds are set.

In a multi bet, the decimal odds of each selection are multiplied together. Example: if three selections have odds of 1.60, 1.70 and 1.90, the combined odds are 1.60 × 1.70 × 1.90 = 5.17 (approximately). So on a ৳100 bet, if all selections are correct you get back ৳517. But if any one selection is wrong, you lose the full ৳100.

Generally yes — since both BPL and IPL are major T20 tournaments, the main markets are the same: match winner, toss, top batsman, over totals and so on. However, odds figures may differ depending on the importance of the match and the relative strength of the teams.

If a match is cancelled or incomplete, bets are generally refunded — though the specific rules depend on the platform's terms and conditions. For more details, read the Terms and Conditions page or contact us via live chat.
